What Is the Purpose of the Engine Air Filter

To create combustion, gas-powered engines need a spark, compression, fuel, and air (diesel engines do away with the spark). The fuel is delivered from the gas tank by the fuel pump, fuel lines, and fuel injectors, the pistons provide compression, and the spark plugs make the spark. But the air is drawn from outside. As you drive, fresh air is drawn into your engine and injected alongside the fuel to create a perfect ratio of fuel and air. To keep your engine from being contaminated, the engine air filter blocks dust, dirt, bugs, rocks, and other debris that might otherwise enter the engine alongside the air supply.

Why Do I Need To Have the Engine Air Filter Replaced?

As the engine air filter continues to block these harmful contaminants, it will become more and more clogged. As it becomes clogged, your vehicle's power and fuel efficiency will begin to decrease. The fuel and air ratio may become too rich (which happens when there's too much fuel and not enough air in the mixture), and eventually, your vehicle may be hard to start. Changing the engine air filter is a quick and easy way to bring your Jeep back to its full potential.

How Often Should I Have the Engine Air Filter Changed?

It's a good idea to have the engine air filter in your Jeep changed about every 10,000 miles. However, different driving conditions may change this. Jeep SUVs are known for their off-road prowess, and off-road driving can expose the air intake to a greater amount of contaminants -- just think of all the dirt and rocks you kick up on the trails! If you regularly go off-roading in your Jeep, you may need to have the filter changed more often.
