What Does the Check Engine Light Mean?

The check engine light can be annoying because it doesn't refer to any one specific problem. Instead, it means that something in your engine is amiss, and needs to be looked into. Since you can't tell what the problem is just by looking at it, a code reader will have to be used. This instrument plugs into your Jeep and reads the problem code that is in your Jeep's computer. This code will let us know what in your Jeep needs to be looked at.

What To Do I Do When the Check Engine Light Comes On?

If the check engine light comes on and it's solid, it means that the problem in your Jeep is probably not an emergency. It is still important that you bring it in for service right away, since the issues that cause the check engine light to come on can lead to damage down the road, and they can reduce your Jeep's performance, fuel efficiency, emissions, and more. If a solid light comes on, wait until you get to your destination. Once you've parked, check the gas cap; sometimes a loose gas cap is the cause of the check engine light. If tightening the cap doesn't work, schedule an appointment.

However, everything changes when the check engine light flashes. A flashing check engine light means that your engine is probably misfiring. This can damage your catalytic converter, so we recommend pulling over as soon as it's safe and turning off your engine. If you do this quickly enough, you may be able to save the catalytic converter.
